Hauptwerk on a budget - Demo of my $1800 virtual pipe organ for home practice

Brief demo of the Hauptwerk virtual pipe organ that I put together as a practice instrument in my home. For less than $1,800 I assembled a virtual organ that sounds great, and is easily expandable in the future. Hauptwerk has made good-sounding practice organs affordable and attainable to a much broader base of organists. A comparable digital organ would easily cost 15-20 TIMES as much as this (albeit it would look quite a lot nicer!). Of course, Hauptwerk is also great for large installations for public performance and in the service of God, but I demonstrate here its practical use as an affordable home organ.

Charles-Marie Widor - Symphony for Organ No. 5

- Composer: Charles-Marie Jean Albert Widor (21 February 1844 -- 12 March 1937) - Performer: Pierre Pincemaille - Year of recording: 2000 (played on the "Cavaillé-Coll de St. François de Sales" organ in Lyon, where Widor himself gave the premiere of this composition) The Symphony for Organ No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42 No. 1, was composed in 1879. 00:00 - I. Allegro vivace 10:34 - II. Allegro cantabile 18:36 - III. Andantino quasi allegretto 25:50 - IV. Adagio 30:55 - V. Toccata In terms of tonal architecture, Widor began his second set of organ symphonies, the four works of Op. 42, published in or around 1880, precisely where he left off with the previous set. The keynotes of the four organ symphonies of that first set (Op. 13) are C-D-E-F, and the Symphony No. 5 for organ, Op. 42, No. 1, is set in the same key as the last of those symphonies: F minor (and, significantly, the four works of Op. 42 outline a keynote scheme parallel to that of Op. 13: F-G-A-B). In the Symphony No. 5, which today may be the most frequently played of Widor's organ symphonies (and certainly contains his most famous movement), we can hear the composer beginning to explore, tentatively and just a little bit at a time, a more chromatically-involved musical palette than he allowed himself in Op. 13. The Organ Symphony No. 5 is in five movements, making it the most compact -- in terms of movement-total, not duration or musical language -- organ symphony yet. Compared to the slim, quasi-improvisatory Toccata that opens the Symphony No. 4 in F minor, the opening Allegro vivo of the Symphony No. 5 is a massive, solidly built movement whose arch-shaped main idea is put through many changes of timbre and character, including a scherzando central episode, over the course of 15 pages of music. With the next movement, the somewhat unusual layout of the Symphony makes itself plain: two quick movements and then two slower movements and a finale. If the goal is to find a traditional symphonic layout in the work, the Allegro cantabile second movement can be considered a kind of scherzo, and the two slower movements, Andantino quasi allegretto and Adagio, might be thought of as a kind of conglomerate slow movement. The energetic Toccata that ends the Symphony, with its repeating, ever-modulating subject, is easily Widor's most famous piece. It is often performed by church organists as a stand-alone composition. Pincemaille plays this organ symphony in an appropriate 'French' way, where many others unfortunately play this lighthearted music like a heavy Reger piece...

Olivier Latry Organist improvises at a pipe organ dedication

Film by http://www.pipe-organ-recordings.com Come hear the organ: http://www.olrbrooklyn.org/organ-recitals-in-new-york-city/ October 18, 2013 | 7pm | Brooklyn, New York Video of a pipe organ dedication after a 6 year journey to fully restore this 80 year-old pipe organ at Our Lady of Refuge Church. http://www.olrbrooklyn.org The Organist from the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, Olivier Latry, came to the middle of Brooklyn to dedicate this pipe organ. The restoration exceeded anyone's wildest dreams. The pipe organ soundd extraordinary. This was due to the 2 firms and their talented craftsmen who spent hundreds of hours renewing thousands of parts in the pipe organ. Particular credit goes to David Schopp of A.R. Schopp's Sons for over seeing the repair and cleaning of all of the reeds in the pipe organ and to Eric Johnson from Quimby Pipe Organs for leading the team to reinstall and tonally finish the organ. The restoration of the pipe organ at Our Lady of Refuge is testament to what can happen when you surround yourself with dreamers, believers and doers, and an understanding that no dream will be realized unless tirelessly pursued. This short video shows a blessing service, adapted from a French tradition, in which the organ is called upon by the priest and the organist improvises on the priest's exhortations. Watch and listen to Father Michael Perry and Olivier Latry at the blessing of an organ whose restoration was underwritten by the generous donations of more than 1500 people, many of whom have (had) never set foot in that church. The moral of the story is: Don't give up, and don't let anyone talk you out of your dream. The video opens with a recording made of the organ in 1982 - that is what the organ used to sound like before it stopped working. Michael Barone, Host and Producer of Pipedreams on American Public Media gives a voice over. http://pipedreams.publicradio.org Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio appears briefly blessing the pipe organ and then the Pastor of the Church, Father Michael Perry calls out to the pipe organ eight times and Olivier Latry one of the organists from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris improvises outstanding musical commentaries. http://www.notredamedeparis.fr/Olivier-LATRY,405 Olivier Latry makes this little pipe organ sound better then it should - there is outstanding music making here. The audio quality is excellent. Enjoy it. Remember! This church had no "rich people" that financially underwrote this restoration, they had a vision and determination and nothing was going to stop them from a first class restoration of this pipe organ. The parish is rich in many other things. Their goal is to share this pipe organ with all people. The companies that carried out this excellent organ restoration: A.R. Schopp's Sons, Inc., is the largest supplier of organ pipes in the United States today. The company has been in business for over 110 years, and four generations of the Schopp family have been involved in its operation. A.R. Schopp's Sons, Inc. 14536 Oyster RoadAlliance, OH 44601 http://www.arschopp.com (330) 821-8406 Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc., has specialized in the building, rebuilding, tuning and servicing of pipe organs for 43 years. The company has a national reputation, with 69 new pipe organs with four large new instruments scheduled through 2017, and many famous rebuilds such as The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, the Cathedral of Saint Paul, San Diego, California, and the Cathedral of Saint Paul, St. Paul, Minnesota.
